When we were choosing healthy ingredients to add to our menu we knew we needed to include flaxseed. These little buggers pack a punch of nutrition in just a small amount. Plus they're easily added to smoothies and bowls without having an affect on taste! It's a win-win in our world, so let's chat about these great benefits, shall we?
Nutritionally speaking, flaxseeds are very high in omega-3, fiber, protein, manganese, magnesium and vitamin B12. Not to mention they also contain vitamin B6, iron, and potassium. Nutritional powerhouse indeed! So what does this actually mean for you and your health? Well we're glad you asked!
High in both soluble and insoluble fiber helps to regulate the food moving through your digestive tract at a slower pace, allowing for more nutrient absorption as well as helping to detox your colon and avoid blood sugar spikes. The fats and B vitamins help reduce dryness of skin aiding in care for acne, eczema and a flaky scalp. Probably one of the best reasons to consume flaxseed is to help your gut-and we could all spare to feel a little better there right?? The digestive benefits range from decreasing inflammation (the root of many gut issues) and natural constipation relief to protecting the gut lining and supporting the growth of probiotics.
While we are always happy to throw in a scoop of these superfood seeds into a smoothie or bowl, their versatility is truly awesome! Sprinkle on top of your salads for an extra boost, mix with water to create a vegan "egg" substitute when baking (or when you start your recipe and realize you forgot to buy eggs!), mix into your morning yogurt, or oatmeal, or use mix it into your breading mix while cooking.
There has been some debate on the best way to consume flaxseed and you'll see you can buy as whole seeds or ground (meal) as well as in a variety of colors. The different colors have different nutritional ratios and all are great to consume. Here at Kali-O's we use ground seeds as it allows the nutrients to be better available to your body for absorption, but feel free to experiment at home!
And of course they are naturally gluten free and very allergy friendly! We hope you'll take advantage of our "boost of the week" and give flaxseeds a try for free!
