March...a great month for wearing green and eating green!

Green bagels…

Green beer…

Green eggs and ham…

…GREEN JUICES AND SMOOTHIES!

(oh come on, you knew that one was coming ;)

Green is one of our favorite colors when it comes to health.  Why?! Because SO MANY delicious and nutritious things are green! DUH

Just to name a few of our favorites: kale, spinach, celery, apples, broccoli, kiwi, avocado, cabbage, brussels sprouts…we could go on and on.  Now we know a lot of you are saying yeah right!  Of course at Kali-O’s we are always serving up some green goodies that include a lot of the previously mentioned deliciousness, but not everyone is *quite* on board with the whole green juice or smoothie thing; and we TOTALLY get it.  Why take a perfectly good tasting juice or smoothie and make it green?! Well for a few reasons actually.

  1. Added nutrition! It is such a SIMPLE way to add nutrients to your day without even noticing
  2. No added “green” flavor.  Hear us out on this one. Yes there are some juices and smoothies that have an overpowering “green” taste, but adding just a handful of greens, won’t add any flavor to your already favorite flavor combo.  Give it a shot, what do you have to lose?!
  3. Battle sugar.  We know all too well how delicious and great fruit juices and smoothies are, but often they are a little high in (albeit natural) sugar.  Adding greens can help up the nutritional value without upping the sugar intake.
  4. Well it IS almost Saint Patrick’s Day and EVERYTHING should be green! And no, not chemically altered to be green, but naturally and deliciously green

So we hope you agree that green can both be festive AND healthy and that if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, you at least give it a try.  I promise it won’t kill you ;)

Added bonus if you can add green to your kiddos drinks and boost that oh so important nutrition for growing bodies!

Here is a simple green juice and green smoothie recipe that are sure not to disappoint.

Juice:

    •    1 cucumbers

    •    4 celery rib

    •    2 apples

    •    6-8 large kale leaves

    •    1/2 lemon

    •    1″ piece of ginger


Smoothie:

        ¾ cup water

        2 cups fresh or thawed pineapple chunks

        1 medium ripe avocado, halved and pitted

        2 cups spinach

        ½ cup ice cubes


Now go out and celebrate ALL THE GREEN!
